Quarter Peal Report 2013

The data used for this report is taken from the quarter peals published in the Ringing World for the year 2013 and 2013 quarters published in January 2014 and includes only those tower and handbell quarters rung at churches, campaniles and residences within the Diocese of Ely. Figures for 2012 are in brackets.

The figures may not tie up with your own records, especially if you have rung quarters outside the Diocese, or quarters have not been sent up to the Ringing World, or are still awaiting publication.  The following figures include 22(25) quarters rung in 2012 but published late in the RW.  This figure is gradually getting lower now that we can submit the details electronically.

A total of 515 quarters have been recorded, which is down on last year’s total of 562.

The running order of the Districts changes slightly this year with 241(267) in the Cambridge District; 130(125) in the Huntingdon District; 121(144) in the Ely District; and 23(26) in the Wisbech District.

A total of 457(525) ringers have taken part; 34% only rang 1 quarter; 45% rang 2-10; 12% rang 11 –20; 4% rang 21-40; 3% rang more than 40; and only 1 person rang over 100!

Janet Garnett retains her top position as leading ringer and those ringing  20+ appear in the list below:

Congratulations to the 17(25) who have rung a quarter for the first time - they are:

Robert Bramley     Anne Field        Bruce Gentles    Greg Pearce           Roger Smith
Ruth Bramley        William Field    Tim Novice         Michael Prest         Jenny Sommerton
Simon Durrant       David Fowler     Harry Palmer     James Richardson   Jane Stilwell

First in hand – Sheila George and Janet Yeo

Conducting for the first time were John Hinton (aged 10), Oliver Bardsley, Christopher Jones and Roderick Johnstone.

Only 60(66) were recorded as service ringing, which probably means that 89% of the ringing is just for fun or celebrating non-religious events.  I therefore emphasize that we must be grateful to all the incumbents and churchwardens of the towers we use for giving us permission to ring.

Included in the totals are 4 date touches of 2013 changes at Trumpington, Great Gransden, Histon and on handbells at Little Gransden.  I am sure that there many quarters of particular note for ringers (1st inside, 1st in method, spliced surprise major multi methods etc) – too many to mention here, but we congratulate them all.  However the quarter of Stedman triples rung silent and non conducted at OLEM in June must be worthy of special note.

I finish with the usual pleas – publish early, keep footnotes brief and concise and Christian names please although you are improving as there were only a couple of quarters this year just using initials.
