Quarter Peal Report 2012

(2011 figures in brackets)

The data used for this report is taken from the quarter peals published in the Ringing World for the year 2012 and January 2013 and includes only those tower and handbell quarters rung at churches, campaniles and residences within the Diocese of Ely. The figures may not tie up with your own records, especially if you have rung quarters outside the Diocese, or quarters have not been sent up to the Ringing World, or are still awaiting publication. The following figures include 25 (34) quarters rung in 2011 but published late in the RW.

A total of 562 quarters have been recorded, which is down on last year’s total of 626 despite all the extra ringing for the Jubilee and Olympics.

The Districts retain their usual running order with 267(302) in the Cambridge District, 144(168) in the Ely District, 125(139) in the Huntingdon District and 26(18) in the Wisbech District.

A total of 525(536) ringers have taken part; 33% only rang 1 quarter; 83% rang 10 or less; 17% rang 11 or more.

Congratulations to the 25(33) who have rung a quarter for the first time - they are

John Anderson    Bob Cox                 Sue Filby                Christopher Jones    Edward Salkield
David Appleby     Jeanette Cox          Jonathan Gayford   James Miller             Ted Smith
Matt Audsley       Imogen Driver         Roger Gooding        Ben Morgan             Jane Turner
Jo Calow            Roger Embling        Cat Harvey             Alan Pateman          Jo Western
Sandra Coulson   Amy-Marie Field     John Hinton             Alfred Pipe              Allan Whyte

I must offer deep apologies here as I missed John Hinton off last year’s list as a first quarter pealer.   John has now gone on to ring even more achieving his 10th quarter on his 10th birthday in 2012 and conducting his first quarter.   An up and coming ringer no doubt.

Another is Alfred Pipe who is the youngest person to ring a quarter at 6 years 335 days and his first on tower bells at Millcroft Campanile at age 7 and also his brother Henry who records his first on big bells at Trumpington (age 9).

5 first quarter pealers were in the band ringing to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee at Wisbech St Mary in June.

Will Scheilling records his first in hand.

Janet Garnett retains her top position as leading ringer and those ringing 20+ appear in the list below:

The leading conductors were the same 3 ringers as last year, but they just changed the order - Edith Robinson 50(29), Janet Garnett 46(61) Adrian Malton 33(36).

Conducting for the first time were Peter Brown, Janet Butlin, Amanda Cator, Robert Flockton, Helen Greenleaves, Camilia Haggett, James Hayden, John Hinton, Sally Mew, Cathy Moulton and Richard Wicks.

Max Drinkwater and Samantha Gorman both record their 100th as C and Andrew Downs his 200th as C.

Only 66 (98) were recorded as service ringing which is only 13% of the total rung.   We must therefore thank all the incumbents for allowing us the use of their bells other than for services and giving us permission to ring, often at no cost.
